Garbouz is a derogatory term used to refer to the Amazigh people of Morocco aka Shleuh. Its use began in Casablanca during the 20th century following an influx of migrants from rural and mountainous regions across the country. While Arab Bedouins integrated with the local population, the berbers/shleuh/amazigh faced difficulties assimilating due to their lack of fluency in Arabic and the local dialect; consequently, people began calling them Grabz(plural of Garbouz) a label mocking the perceived awkwardness of their speech.
