This is a particle/modifier that is used to show ownership or possession. It can be used in place of the normal genitive construction. Can mean "of" or "belonging to." When used alone with a possessive pronoun ending, it takes on the possessive pronoun meaning; eg. "His, hers, yours, mine, ours, etc."
